You’ve seen them all over Twitter. The bloggers who have weeks, or even months, of blog posts scheduled in advance. The ones that spend a whole Sunday taking blog photos and editing them. Whenever I see this, I feel incredibly impressed, and then I always wonder where I’m going wrong. But I don’t think that being a blogger who plans ahead is always the best thing to do, and here is why.
Live in the moment and prepare to change
Life can change at the shortest notice. You could be sitting at work on a Friday afternoon and find yourself visiting a new city, or even a new country, the next day without expecting it. New experiences always give lots of potential for blog posts, so you don’t need to limit yourself by planning in advance.
Have space to be spontaneous and embrace that.
We all lead busy lives
Unless I took a fortnight off work, I don’t have a clue how I would be able to get so far in advance with my blog. Even though I have the best of intentions sometimes, like when I have a quiet weekend so I have lots of time to write, it will always be followed by a super busy week afterwards.
Get out there and enjoy living your life – your blog will always be there when you get back.
Blogging is a hobby, so don’t get caught up in deadlines
This is meant to be fun! I could easily set myself strict deadlines to have certain posts up by certain days, but where is the fun in that? I’ll save the deadlines for work and the weekends and evenings to have fun and enjoy myself. Work when you can, and don’t expect more of yourself than that. If it’s starting to feel more like a part-time job and less like fun, it’s time to take a step back.
Of course I have nothing against planning bloggers – and I am more than a little bit jealous! I think it should be down to every individual person with a blog to decide what works best for them. There should definitely not be a stigma against people who write and post straight away. We’re all busy and make the most of the time that we have, so let’s embrace that.
What do you think? Are you a planner or a winger when it comes to your blog?
